Tearing myself away from Modern Warfare 2

This past week Modern Warfare 2 was released this past Tuesday. It's a common in-joke in the community that productivity would drop sharply as soon as the game was made available to the public. People attended the midnight releases, called in sick for work, and just sat themselves down to the sequel to one of 2007's most critically acclaimed games. Indeed, when one of my own classes was canceled due to furloughs on Thursday, I originally planned on going home to play it then come back for my campus club meeting in the evening. I ended up getting sucked into the game and stayed home.

So what about this is so amazing. Surely it's not terribly different from Call of Duty 4? Well, it's amazing how much better a game gets when you just give the gamer more of everything. While there are few changes in the core mechanics, just giving the player more can be all that's needed to make this game go from a good sequel to the being the largest selling game in history. The game's biggest selling points are basically divided into three options on the main menu. Single player campaign, co-op spec ops mode, and online multiplayer.

Most people should jump into single player first. It'll give newer players experience on the game and give a prep to players from CoD4. The story can be likened to an awesome action film, like a James Bond movie that's heavy on the gun play and less on the suave character. A massive theater of war, twists and turns in the storyline, and fantastic set pieces and triggers. Very few games use the idea of North America being invaded quite as well as the standard MW2 has set.

Spec ops has been heralded as MW2's greatest strength, being a new feature done well in this time of co-op survival game types. Spec ops has a collection of short stand alone missions that are made for two players to complete. One of my favorite things about spec ops is the variety of settings they take place in from a completely unique suspension bridge to even places right out of CoD4 like Chernobyl from the Ghillies in the Mist mission and the Russian country side that made the AC-130 famous in CoD4.

Lastly is online multiplayer, which is a whole different beast. After all, plenty of people are still playing CoD4 nearly 3 years later, and there will undoubtedly be people unsatisfied with MW2 who will go back to CoD4. The basic formula is still here. Basic fps shooting game giving you experience for playing well, letting you level up and unlock new items to use along the way until you hit the level cap. The new additions like customizable killstreaks and weapons are what really make multiplayer shine, but it really should just be it's own post.

In short, MW2 is a stellar package. It has three great modes which will impress even the most critical players.
